Employee relations support

Support with disciplinaries, grievances, absence and performance issues, so sensitive employee matters are handled fairly, consistently and calmly.

Two people talking across a wooden table in a quiet, naturally lit meeting room.

When this support could help

  • A disciplinary, conduct or performance issue needs handling carefully.
  • An employee has raised a formal grievance.
  • Short-term absence is becoming a pattern, or a long-term absence needs managing.
  • Relationships in a team have broken down.
  • You are worried a situation could lead to a claim.
  • You are not sure whether to follow an informal or formal route.

Support can include

  • Advice on disciplinary and grievance procedures
  • Support with investigations and investigation reports
  • Support with disciplinary and grievance hearings
  • Absence management, including long-term sickness
  • Performance and capability processes
  • Workplace conflict and difficult conversations
  • Outcome letters and appeals

Fair, consistent handling of sensitive employee matters

Disciplinaries, grievances and absence cases are some of the most stressful situations a manager deals with. They are also where small process mistakes cause the biggest problems. An investigation that was not quite thorough enough, evidence that was not shared, or a decision made before the employee had a chance to respond can make a fair outcome look unfair.

Sapphire helps you handle these matters calmly and correctly. Founder Tracey Darby has more than 20 years' experience of complex employee relations cases in UK and international organisations, and brings that judgement to each situation.

Disciplinary and grievance support

We can support any stage of a disciplinary or grievance process:

  • deciding whether an informal conversation or a formal process is right
  • planning and carrying out a fair investigation
  • inviting the employee to a hearing and sharing the evidence correctly
  • running the hearing, or advising the manager who chairs it
  • reaching and recording a reasonable outcome
  • handling an appeal

Our free disciplinary hearing flowchart shows the steps a fair hearing should follow.

Absence and performance management

Frequent short absences, long-term sickness and performance that is not improving all need a clear, consistent approach. We help you hold the right conversations, consider reasonable adjustments where health may be involved, and follow a fair process if things do not improve. Our absence management guide covers the basics for line managers.

Why process matters more than ever

From 1 January 2027, employees will be able to bring an unfair dismissal claim after six months' service instead of two years. The cap on unfair dismissal compensation is also being removed. A consistent, well-documented process protects your organisation and treats your people fairly.

Support that stays in the background, or alongside you

Some clients want advice in the background while their managers lead the process. Others want hands-on help. We agree the right level of support at the start, so you know exactly what we will do.

Sapphire is based in Derbyshire and supports employers across the Midlands and the UK, remotely and onsite.

How the engagement starts

  1. Tell us briefly what is happening. Please keep confidential employee details out of your first message.

  2. In a free 30-minute consultation, we talk through the situation and your options.

  3. We agree the support you need, from advice in the background to hands-on help with the process.

  4. We stay involved until the matter is resolved and the outcome is recorded.

Sapphire is founder-led, with Tracey Darby as Founder. We provide remote and onsite support across the UK, with a Midlands focus.

Your questions

What does employee relations support cover?

Employee relations covers the relationship between an organisation and its people, and in practice the issues that need careful handling: disciplinaries, grievances, absence, performance, conduct and workplace conflict.

Can you help with a disciplinary that is already under way?

Yes. We can review what has happened so far, advise on the next steps and help you put right any gaps in the process before a decision is made.

Do you follow the Acas Code of Practice?

Yes. Our advice on disciplinary and grievance matters follows the Acas Code of Practice, which sets the minimum standard of fairness employment tribunals expect.

Can you represent us at an employment tribunal?

We are an HR consultancy, not a law firm, so we do not provide legal representation. If a matter needs legal advice or representation, we will tell you and can work alongside your employment solicitor.

How quickly can you help?

We reply to enquiries within a working day, Monday to Friday. Tell us in your enquiry if the matter is time-sensitive.
